If you are an experienced independent school leader who is global minded, believes in a holistic education, and is committed to furthering a lofty mission and a centuries-old motto of working toward enlightenment, Newark Academy is the school for you.

Educators Collaborative is pleased to be partnering with the Newark Academy in its search for a new Head of School to succeed Donald Austin, who is retiring after an extraordinarily successful 17 year tenure leading this exceptional school.

About the School

Founded in 1774 by a group of civic leaders led by a Presbyterian cleric, Newark Academy has always been a unique college preparatory school in that it opened its doors to students from a wide range of backgrounds, offered courses in trades and business skills, and even maintained a division for young women for a time.  Today it continues to uphold its original motto Ad Lumen (Toward Enlightenment), offering a robust educational program to middle and high school co-ed students, grades 6-12, coming from 85 different communities. With a current enrollment of 667, of whom 63 percent are students of color (as defined by the National Association of Independent Schools), Newark Academy was the first school in New Jersey to be authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.  The Academy boasts a rigorous academic program, including AP and the IBDP, complemented by strong offerings in athletics and the arts, service opportunities, and experiential learning, both on and off campus.

The campus facilities support Newark Academy’s mission to contribute to the world engaged individuals instilled with a passion for learning, a standard of excellence, and a generosity of spirit.” Located on an idyllic 68-acre campus in Livingston, where it moved in 1964, the school enjoys modern and well-maintained facilities that provide remarkable resources for its student and the entire community, including the Hawkes Memorial Library, the McGraw Arts Center, the Simon Family Field House, the Carol Heaney Nature Trail, the Petrello Upper School Academic Center, Kacur Field, the Wilf Middle School (2017) and the Coraci Performance Hall (2020).

Working with a dynamic, diverse, and professional Board of Trustees, composed of current and past parents and alumni, the next Head of School at Newark Academy will have the opportunity to build on a strong, centuries-old foundation in offering an exceptional education to a diverse community of students.
