Mission

As a community of learners, Dwight-Englewood School strives to foster in each student a passion for life-long learning. We seek excellence, honor integrity, and embrace diversity in order to develop the skills, values, and courage to meet the challenges of a changing world and make it better.

About the Position

The Lower School Principal reports to the Head of School and is a member of the senior administrative team. S/he oversees the PS-3 through Grade 5 Lower School of over 260 students and more than 45 faculty and staff members. The Principal is supported by two Assistant Principals and a support services team consisting of a psychologist, a nurse, and literacy and math specialists. In addition to the classroom teachers and assistant teachers, there is a team of ‘specials teachers’ who teach Spanish, music, art, STEM, health and wellness, and research and information skills.

The next Lower School Principal will have the opportunity to build upon the work of the past years, during which the School has engaged in faculty-wide training in the Responsive Classroom approach and brought coherence and consistency to the curriculum and pedagogy in several areas. The literacy curriculum has recently shifted to a research based curriculum called Collaborative Classroom, utilizing a phonics sequence by UFli, coupled with Columbia University Teachers College’s Writing Workshop. The mathematics curriculum is problem-solving oriented and follows the research-based Singapore Mathematics approach.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Lower School leader and a skilled Lower School teacher who loves children and enjoys being in the classroom and being present with students, teachers, and parents. S/he will have experience with supporting teachers in curricular and classroom management initiatives. Importantly, s/he will be a culturally competent visionary educator with a demonstrated commitment to and skill in leading a diverse community of learners with an integrated curricular approach to embracing and ensuring equity, inclusion, and belonging from the earliest years. Warm and approachable to students, teachers, and parents; kind yet firm; reflective and collaborative; passionate about children and education; committed to knowing every child; and an active listener, the next Lower School Principal will find an excellent school that seeks to be even better and that has the team and resources to make that quest a reality.
