4100 Merrill Rd, Dallas, TX

The Position

The Clark Family Head of Upper School (HOUS) at The Episcopal School of Dallas holds the primary responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the upper school division and reports directly to the Head of School. Their work focuses on building meaningful relationships with students, faculty, and parents that will allow the successful candidate to inform and implement curricular initiatives and ensure high quality classroom instruction, a strong advisory system, and a culture of inclusion, belonging, accountability, and responsiveness. All upper school teachers report directly to the HOUS. He/she also manages a leadership team that includes the Assistant Head of Upper School, grade level Deans, the Upper School Counselors, and the Director of College Placement who all act as important collaborators in this work.

The HOUS is part of a strong academic leadership team with the other Division Heads (middle and lower) and the Chief Academic Officer. This group meets regularly and offers collaborative problem-solving support to one another. She/he is also a key member of a stable Executive Leadership Team that includes a diverse mix of long-serving ESD employees and other newer voices. This group of twelve, chaired by the Head of School, meets weekly both to discuss day-to-day operational issues and to engage in long-term strategic planning. Ideal HOUS candidates will possess outstanding emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of strong teaching and teacher development, and a creativity to develop and help implement mission-appropriate programs.

The successful candidate for HOUS will be joining ESD at an exciting time. Our next strategic plan is being developed and will include significant support geared directly toward attracting, developing, and retaining the finest possible teaching faculty. Additionally as part of the plan and under the direction of the school’s Chief Academic Officer (CAO), ESD will be implementing an innovative curriculum which will even better fulfill the school’s mission of igniting lives of purpose. The next HOUS will partner with the CAO in implementing this programming and growing teachers, while maintaining the school’s culture of community as expressed through the ESD’s strong Episcopal Identity.

The School

The Episcopal School of Dallas prepares young men and women for lives of intellectual discovery, integrity, and purpose. Essential to this process is the intentionality with which we live out our mission and Episcopal Identity. Built upon our Founding Tenets of Daily Worship, Training in Community, and Ethical Decision-Making, ESD is committed to the intellectual, spiritual, and physical wellness of every member of its community.

Founded in 1974 by The Reverend Stephen B. Swann with eight seventh-grade students, today ESD educates and inspires 1,170 students in grades beginner (age 3) through grade 12. ESD is located in Dallas, a modern metropolis of North Texas, and a commercial and cultural hub in the region.

At the heart of ESD are talented and compassionate faculty and staff who are the backbone of our institution and paramount to the school’s success. They adeptly balance rigorous, college preparatory coursework with understanding and nurturing of the whole child. Classes are small, with an overall student-teacher ratio of 7:1. ESD employees are lifelong learners, and the school invests nearly $500,000 in professional development annually. More than 270 employees serve the ESD community, and all are appreciated and respected for their individual and collective contributions.
