Overview

The Co-op School, a small progressive Brooklyn school that serves students from two years old through eighth grade, is seeking a Head of School for July 2023. The ideal candidate will wholeheartedly embrace the school’s mission, core values, and culture and bring excellent communication skills and a deep commitment to diversity to build strong relationships with faculty, students, and staff. At a pivotal moment in the school’s development, the Head will bring the skills and experience necessary to grow enrollment, increase retention, and work with the Board on long-term financial planning while maintaining the intimacy and warmth of a special and highly engaged community.

About the School

Founded on the floor of a brownstone in 2003 as a high-quality, affordable preschool option in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene, the Co-op School has matured quickly from a small, parent-run playgroup. In 2011, it launched its first kindergarten class, and in 2020, it graduated its first eighth-grade class. In 2019, the school opened its doors at 644 Gates Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant–a 30,000-square-foot building with a double-height gym, a rooftop library, and two playgrounds—to house preschool, lower school, and middle school students under one roof.

The mission of The Co-op School is to inspire passion and teach children to become protagonists in their educational journey by fostering their innate sense of curiosity and creativity. The school’s rigorous academic program uses a constructivist, inquiry-based approach that listens to and honors the individual interests and strengths of each child. The Co-op School’s core values–compassion, uniqueness, community action, anti-racism, and joy–guide the educational program and community interactions. A private school at an accessible price point, the Co-op School invites the participation of the parents, creating a strong sense of community and engagement with the school.
