The Lycée Français de New York seeks candidates for the position of Head of High School, to start on July 1, 2024. This is an exciting opportunity for talented, bilingual leaders who possess a thorough understanding of both the French and American systems of education and embrace this unique melding of two cultures in a truly bilingual setting. The Lycée currently has 1200 students ranging from Nursery through twelfth grade and representing over 65 different nationalities.

Leaders for such a community must have a strong growth mind set, be willing to constantly question what it means to deliver on such a mission and be empathetic and well-versed in multicultural understanding.

The next Head of High School will promote the school’s distinct qualities among New York City’s leading  independent schools, its mosaic of vibrant cultures and values, the excellence of its faculty, its unique  student body, its capacity for innovation, and its reputation for excellence. The Head of High School  (HoHS) leads the High School division which at the Lycée comprises grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. A member of the Academic Leadership Team and the Secondary Pedagogical Leadership Team, the HoHS works in support of the vision articulated by the Director of Secondary and the Head of School by designing and implementing policies, programs and curricular activities for the High School in a manner that promotes the personal and educational development of each student and the professional growth of each faculty and staff member.

The School

The Lycée Français de New York is a world-renowned bilingual independent school with an academically demanding, pluricultural program unique in New York City. Accredited by both the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the French Ministry of Education, the school  curriculum and community life adeptly blend American and French educational philosophies in a spirit of  joy, innovation, rigor and excellence. The school now enrolls 1,200 students in grades Nursery through 12, and has approximately 260 employees, 146 of whom are faculty.

Courage, culture, citizenship and innovation have always been a part of the Lycée Français de New York. Founded with global foresight in the midst of the Great Depression in 1935 by the Consul General of France in New York, Mr. Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle, and a group of French and American officials, his vision for the Lycée was about more than creating a top high school, it was about shaping bright minds and leaders of tomorrow in a complex world.

What began with 24 students in three grades in a small basement has grown over 80 years to include nearly 35,000 students and graduates representing more than 150 nationalities.

The Position

The Head of High School reports to the Director of Secondary and is responsible for the following areas:

  • Instructional leadership: developing goals and objectives consistent with secondary vision, school mission, values, and strategic plan.
  • Organizational leadership: supporting an inclusive culture and climate that upholds the school vision, promotes excellence, collaboration, and mutual respect amongst the staff, teachers, students and families.
  • Student conduct and support: supervise the Dean of Students for High School; advocate for the best interests of students, serve as an adult of reference, develop and maintain an inclusive and equitable environment for all students.
  • Student performance and assessment, including participation in admissions committees and assisting the College Counseling office on all matters pertaining to college and university planning.
  • Personnel: assisting the Director of Secondary in attracting, recruiting, evaluating, and retaining the best teachers.

Qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in student services or comparable responsibilities
  • Bilingual fluency in French and English. The HoHS is required to communicate with the French Ministry of Education and manage the official French exams.
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset, curiosity, and inventiveness, and be able and willing to question the status quo
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Superior communication and organizational skills with a focus on customer service
  • Attention to detail and an ability to identify the needs of the different constituencies
  • Ability to lead and train others and to receive and give feedback in a constructive manner
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects
  • Demonstrated ability to be a proactive and positive team player who can effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

Salary range:  $175,000-$195,000
