Welcome to Rudolf Steiner School
Established in 1928, Rudolf Steiner School was the first Waldorf School in North America. Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, RSS enrolls nearly 300 students in nursery through grade 12. The school strives to build a healthy, inclusive community that reflects the diversity of NYC. The Mission of RSS

About the Positions
Lower School Chair
The Lower School comprises Nursery through grade six. The leading responsibility of the Lower School Chair is to support all aspects of pedagogy and program for students, families, and teachers in this area of the school. The Lower School Chair also participates in the school’s Leadership Council as well as in the school’s College of Teachers, to give attention to school-wide pedagogical issues. This leader will also support admission and retention efforts.
Upper School Chair
The Upper School comprises grades seven through twelve. The leading responsibility of the Upper School Chair is to support all aspects of pedagogy and program for students, families, and teachers in this area of the school. The Upper School Chair also participates in the school’s Leadership Council as well as in the school’s College of Teachers, to give attention to school-wide pedagogical issues. Depending on a candidate’s particular strengths and abilities and the emerging needs of the Upper School, the position may involve a combination of teaching and administrative responsibilities including admission and retention work.
Desired Skills and Attributes
- Experience in Waldorf education, including an intention to deepen knowledge and understanding
- Capacity to represent the school’s curriculum, values, and aims to current and prospective families, as well as to represent the school in the wider community of schools in the New York City area
- Ability as an educator to engage with adolescents and inspire their trust
- Experience in a leadership role in an educational setting, including an understanding of how different academic and non-academic departments interconnect and interrelate;
- Capacity to collaborate, delegate, and resolve conflicts effectively
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with faculty, administration, Board of Trustees, parents, and students
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree; master’s preferred
