Head of School to start July 2012
Summit Montessori School is a premier independent school providing a comprehensive education based on the concepts of Maria Montessori while embracing new methods and ways of teaching in a community dedicated to developing respectful, self-motivated, life-long learners. Through a challenging, individualized, Montessori-based curriculum, children cultivate their strengths to reach their unique potential and to become active participants in the global community.
Offering a family-friendly variety of options (full-day preschool and half-day preschool, full day kindergarten, extended day including early drop-off and late pick-up for all pre-school, primary school, and elementary school students), Summit serves an international student body from cities and towns west of Boston.
The School is divided into three sections: The Children’s House is the equivalent of preschool and kindergarten and serves children from three to six years of age. There are three classrooms for this age group. In the Lower Elementary, students who are six to nine years old learn together in one classroom. This is the equivalent of grades 1-3. The Upper Elementary School is one classroom comprised of children ages nine through 12. This is the equivalent of grades 4-6.
At Summit, there is respect for the individual child; with teacher guidance, each student pursues a curriculum that is tailored to his or her own strengths and interests. Children learn most effectively when they are responsible and accountable for their work. The result is a more confident learner. Summit adheres to the “prepared environment” that Maria Montessori advocated; that is, the classrooms stimulate students to choose their own activities and work at their own pace. As a Montessori school, faculty believe that children learn best by first understanding the concrete, and then moving to the abstract. Teachers teach to the highest standards, but listen to the student’s needs. Students work to their maximum potential and are active learners engaged in discovery.
Preferred candidates will have teaching, administrative and curriculum development experience in an academically rigorous setting. SMS believes strongly in the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. The School does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, or on the basis of national or ethnic origin, in admissions and financial aid programs, in the administration of its educational programs or in employment policies.
