New York, New York
Head of School search for July 1, 2013

The Rodeph Sholom School is seeking a Head of School with independent school background to lead its more than 650 students from early childhood through grade 8. RSS operates a highly academic program, with graduates matriculating to some of New York City’s finest independent schools, including Dalton, Columbia Grammar, Collegiate, Fieldston, Horace Mann, Riverdale, Trinity and Spence, as well as the City’s top competitive entry public schools such as The Bronx High School of Science and Stuyvesant.

What makes Rodeph Sholom School a unique and attractive opportunity is its mission: Founded in 1958, the school “fosters intellectual curiosity through a challenging independent school academic program in nursery through eighth grade. At the heart of RSS is a warm, vibrant community, where students are guided by Jewish knowledge, values, and ethics to become self-confident and socially responsible leaders.” RSS achieves top notch-academic performance, for demanding Manhattan families, while providing a curriculum and an environment that also focuses on Jewish knowledge and values as part of the vibrant community of the renowned Reform Congregation Rodeph Sholom. The Board of Trustees is seeking an accomplished educator who believes in the school’s unique mission.

Rodeph Sholom School has two locations in the heart of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, just steps away from Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. The School welcomes all families who embrace the mission of challenging academics combined with an integrated secular and Judaic program. While the clergy from the affiliated synagogue play an important part in the students’ school experience, the school’s governance is typical of other accredited independent schools, where the Head of School reports to the School’s Board of Trustees.

RSS’s facilities include two libraries, four modern science labs, a multimedia room, large gymnasium, ample outdoor space for recess and a cafeteria. The physical education program is designed to help students develop individual skills, teamwork, self-confidence and sportsmanship. Middle school students are all encouraged to participate in the interscholastic team sports offered in the Fall and Spring. RSS is also deeply committed to encourage students to explore the arts. Art, drama and music classes are part of the core curriculum, and the School hosts an art show, two musicals, and several choir and band performances each year. Students participate in a number of field trips throughout New York City, the United States and Israel. RSS also offers a variety of after-school and summer programs.

RSS is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). It is a member of the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

The Trustees seek in the next Head of School an educator with a proven record of skillful leadership and management of a large and complex school. S/he should be someone who looks forward to daily interactions with students and who has the self-confidence to be both at ease and firm with the challenges and demands of high expectations in New York City. The successful candidate will be someone who will work well with the religious leaders of the Synagogue, will participate eagerly in fundraising activities, and will serve as a role model for the student body. The Board expects to make an appointment by the end of October or sooner with the Head-Elect to assume responsibility on or about July 1, 2013. Rodeph Sholom School is an equal opportunity employer. Salary and benefits are highly competitive.

211 students, ages 15 months through age 12
Head of School search for July 1, 2012

Newton Montessori School, located in Newton Centre, MA, is a diverse, collaborative community committed to fostering a love of learning in children 15 months through age 12 through the Montessori philosophy. Established in 2006, the School seeks a head of school to succeed Ellen Kelley, who was appointed six years ago.

Newton Montessori School is a joyful, academically-rich learning environment in which each member is supported and challenged to discover strengths and explore opportunities in an atmosphere of respect for self, others, and the environment. Children, families, and staff are empowered to reach their fullest potential as passionate life-long learners who are confident independent thinkers, and caring, responsible contributors toward peace in our world.

NMS offers a comprehensive program enriched by art, Latin, music, physical education, Spanish, theater and woodworking, and science and nature. The goal is for each student to develop a love of learning, a sense of responsibility, a level of inner discipline, self-confidence, a spirit of enthusiasm, comfortable independence, and true joy. From these roots, a strong student and positive contributor to the world will grow.
The School is proud of the diversity within its community. There are families hailing from over 47 countries and speaking over 20 languages. Diversity is reflected in the staff as well; they represent a wide variety of religions, cultures, ethnicities, and lifestyles.

In all classrooms, lead teachers have strong Montessori backgrounds. They have received teaching credentials from Montessori training programs around the world and are either AMS or AMI certified. At NMS, a co-teaching model is embraced, offering students a deeper and broader experience.

Newton Montessori School is a member of the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE) and the American Montessori Society (AMS) and is awaiting dual accreditation from these organizations following a rigorous two-year application and review process.

The Board of Directors seeks an experienced educator able to provide dynamic, visionary leadership as the school anticipates the next step in its evolution. Deep appreciation for the Montessori philosophy of education is required as is significant experience in a senior administrative position. A bachelor’s and master’s degree are requirements for this position. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

Newton Montessori School is a non-profit school which admits students of every race, color, religion, sex, national or ethnic origin, or political beliefs to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to the students of the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or political views.

Framingham, Massachusetts
www.summitmontessori.org
Pre-school – Grade 6, 70 students, Co-ed Day School
Head of School to start July 2012

Summit Montessori School is a premier independent school providing a comprehensive education based on the concepts of Maria Montessori while embracing new methods and ways of teaching in a community dedicated to developing respectful, self-motivated, life-long learners. Through a challenging, individualized, Montessori-based curriculum, children cultivate their strengths to reach their unique potential and to become active participants in the global community.

Offering a family-friendly variety of options (full-day preschool and half-day preschool, full day kindergarten, extended day including early drop-off and late pick-up for all pre-school, primary school, and elementary school students), Summit serves an international student body from cities and towns west of Boston.

The School is divided into three sections: The Children’s House is the equivalent of preschool and kindergarten and serves children from three to six years of age. There are three classrooms for this age group. In the Lower Elementary, students who are six to nine years old learn together in one classroom. This is the equivalent of grades 1-3. The Upper Elementary School is one classroom comprised of children ages nine through 12. This is the equivalent of grades 4-6.

At Summit, there is respect for the individual child; with teacher guidance, each student pursues a curriculum that is tailored to his or her own strengths and interests. Children learn most effectively when they are responsible and accountable for their work. The result is a more confident learner. Summit adheres to the “prepared environment” that Maria Montessori advocated; that is, the classrooms stimulate students to choose their own activities and work at their own pace. As a Montessori school, faculty believe that children learn best by first understanding the concrete, and then moving to the abstract. Teachers teach to the highest standards, but listen to the student’s needs. Students work to their maximum potential and are active learners engaged in discovery.

Preferred candidates will have teaching, administrative and curriculum development experience in an academically rigorous setting. SMS believes strongly in the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. The School does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, or on the basis of national or ethnic origin, in admissions and financial aid programs, in the administration of its educational programs or in employment policies.

Boston, MA
Coed Day School
250 Students, Toddler through Grade 6
Director of Elementary for July 2012

Located near Copley Square in downtown Boston, Kingsley Montessori School serves 251 students, toddler through Grade 6. In 2005, the school expanded to a two-campus school by leasing a three-story building one block away from the early childhood building. This new space was renovated under the school’s direction, to preserve its 19th century charm and to create a state-of-the-art environment for elementary-age students and their learning. Facilities include six classrooms on the third and fourth floors, art and music studios, world language room, science lab, library, presentation space, and open community meeting and performance spaces. All of the classroom spaces boast new hardwood floors, exposed brick walls and beautiful stained glass in large, sun-filled windows original to the building (when it was built as the First Spiritual Temple in 1883). The next Director of Elementary will help to manage Kingsley’s ongoing growth and development within the Exeter Street campus and works closely with Director of Early Childhood to assure smooth transitions for family and student.

The original Kingsley School was founded in 1938 by two pioneering educators, Edith Kingsley and Helen Loud, as a small private school in the Back Bay area of Boston. Since then the school has grown and moved locations, before settling on its current location in two historic buildings in the heart of Boston.

Kingsley is a nurturing academic community with a singular goal – to prepare children for future academic and social success. The Montessori method is the basic teaching foundation. The school actively manages the academic transition for students from early childhood to lower elementary, and again to the upper elementary. Typically, all teachers in early childhood and lower elementary are Montessori-certified instructors. At the upper elementary level, students experience an expanded use of conventional teaching methods and practices as they prepare for transitions to competitive public and private secondary schools. Kingsley is often described as “Montessori plus” thanks to the richness of its program and the school’s pursuit of educational best practices in teaching and learning. Its city location provides Kingsley a wealth of opportunities for enrichment and collaboration.

Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Elementary oversees the Lower and Upper Elementary programs (Grades l-6), and is in frequent contact with the Director of Early Childhood who oversees the preschool program, toddler through Kindergarten, in the school’s Fairfield Street campus.

The school recently completed a strategic planning process that emphasizes, among other things, Kingsley’s drive to promote a curriculum that is rooted in Montessori principles and embraces the best of 21st century teaching and learning. Kingsley maintains a vibrant program of guest speakers on topics of importance to today’s educators and parents.
