The Winston School
SHORT HILLS, NJ
Head of School to take office July 2009
The Winston School was founded in 1981, as an independent coeducational day school, grades 1 – 8, to educate students who, though intellectually capable, have typically had difficulties in schools due to language-based learning disabilities. The goal of the School is to enable students to meet with confidence the academic and social challenges of life. Winston fosters the potential and optimism in each student by cultivating intellectual, social, and emotional growth in a positive and stimulating environment. A faculty of 20 teaches 61 students, often in small groups of two and three, and sometimes one-on-one. Assistance technology plays an essential role in each child’s learning experience. Eighty-four percent of Winston School parents contribute to the annual fund and the School’s endowment is $3m.
Located in an historic building in a beautiful wooded section of Short Hills, with access to a gymnasium, playground and soccer field, The Winston School draws students from public and private elementary and middle schools from several communities within commuting distance to Short Hills. The town of Short Hills is 25 miles from New York City with frequent train service to Manhattan, making some of the world’s most renowned educational and cultural opportunities within easy reach. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools.
The Board of Trustees seeks an outstanding and innovative educator to lead this dynamic school as it plans to double its enrollment over the next five years and move to a new facility. The new Head must embrace the School’s mission; be conversant with best practices in the delivery of services to students with language-based learning disabilities; and lead key initiatives in the School's strategic plan. S/he must also be committed to fostering warm relationships with students, faculty and parents in a very supportive and close-knit community.
