JOHN BURROUGHS SCHOOL

St. Louis, MO
Head of School Search for July 2009

The Trustees of John Burroughs School seek a new Head of School to succeed Keith Shahan, who began serving as Head of School in 1986 and will retire in June 2009.  The legacy of leadership at JBS is exceptionally steady and strong, with five Heads serving since the founding of the School in 1923.

John Burroughs School, with 113 full-and part-time faculty members and 590 students in grade 7-12, is situated on a beautiful 47.5-acre state-of-the-art campus in Ladue, a suburb of St. Louis. The School enjoys a well-deserved reputation in the Saint Louis community as well as regionally and nationally among independent schools.  The students are exceptional: the Class of 2008 has 30 National Merit Semifinalists and 18 Letter of Commendation winners among the 100 seniors, and four of Missouri’s 22 Presidential Scholars since 1995 attended Burroughs.  The School is in a sound financial position with an annual budget of $14.8 million, an endowment of $43 million and strong demand for admission.  To serve as the Head of this school will be a prime leadership opportunity.

Consistent with the vision of the Founders, the School emphasizes “a progressive education married to the classical tradition in which faculty and students are given freedom and responsibility.”  Burroughs applies the liberal arts philosophy of higher education to secondary education with a strong, dynamic faculty that serves and stimulates capable learners. JBS has superior arts, athletic, and activity programs that complement the academic offerings.  The words of Dr. Shahan best describe the essence of Burroughs:  “Living appropriately and fully for life itself and with the good of others in mind is our goal as a school.”
