Hillside School is an independent boarding and day school for boys, attending grades 5-9. For over 100 years Hillside has provided educational and residential services to boys who need to develop their academic and social skills while building self-confidence and maturity.

The 200-acre school is located in a rural section of Marlborough, MA, 25 miles west of Boston, and includes a working farm.

Hillside accommodates both traditional learners who want a more personalized education, and boys with learning differences and/or attention problems.

Current Leadership and Vision:

Mr. David Beecher, who has served as Headmaster since 1998, has overseen a transformation of Hillside School from a school struggling to stay open, to one that has consistently balanced budgets, strong admissions and a well-managed Master Plan. The Business Manager will play a vital role in the ongoing transformation and strengthening of Hillside School.

Position Description:

The Business Manager oversees the financial and business administration of the School including budgeting, resources allocation, short and long-term financial planning, accounting and financial reporting, endowment and investment management.

Overseeing the School’s annual operating budget of $6 million and assets of more than $25 million, the Business Manager serves the campus community by directing the budget development process and assembling the final budget for recommendation to the Board, providing on-going support to departments in planning and daily operations; and providing strategic information to the Headmaster concerning all business matters.

The Business Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining strong internal control policies and procedures; forecasting capital requirements; assuring protection for the assets of the School through internal control, internal auditing, and ensuring proper insurance coverage; and keeping the Headmaster, Finance Committee and Board informed of the School’s financial performance and providing advice on all financial matters.

The Business Manager supervises a staff of four, reports to the Headmaster, and serves on the Head’s Administrative Team.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee overall Business Office operations, including budgeting, investments, capital projects reports, short-term investment activity, capital borrowing arrangements and cash flow
  • Manage all accounting including appropriate financial procedures and controls, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, gift receipts, general ledger, parent loans, purchasing, employee benefit administration, investment records, taxes, and other accounting systems
  • Maintain responsibility for all auxiliary services including purchasing, food service, transportation, and the school store
  • Oversee personnel programs and policies as they relate to hiring and termination of all School employees
  • Ensure that all health and safety systems are fully functional, that the School is in compliance with government regulations and that adequate and cost effective insurance is in force
  • Guide and support Business Office staff, senior staff, the Board Finance Committee, and board members to work cohesively and collaboratively to achieve agreed upon financial goals
  • Supervise a staff of four, including an Assistant Business Manager, Controller, Director of Building & Grounds and Head Chef.
  • Serve on the Head’s Administrative Team and as liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Headmaster.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred
  • An understanding of and respect for the mission and culture of Hillside School
  • Experience in finance, accounting, strategic planning, financial modeling and investment strategy
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and board members
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; an ability to relate well with all constituents of School community
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • A high degree of professionalism, sound judgment, integrity, and discretion while maintaining complete confidentiality
  • High energy, consistent follow through, and an exemplary work ethic

 Compensation:

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include Medical, Dental, Retirement and Vacation. The position is a full-time, twelve month position beginning July 1, 2009 or sooner.
