Foothill Country Day School
Claremont, CA
Head of School Search for July, 2011
Foothill Country Day School, a coeducational day school for students in grades K-8, was founded in 1954 by Howell Webb. Mr. Webb, who came from a long line of educators and school founders, served as Headmaster until 1986. Since then, three heads of school have served, prior to the current interim headship of Dr. Clint Taylor. From its inception, the school has been a non-profit, board-governed school. Foothill maintains many of the same features that have distinguished the school since its early years, among them:
- A clear mission, first articulated by the school’s founder and first headmaster
- A close-knit, family-oriented community blessed with many enduring school traditions
- A stimulating and rigorous academic program marked by a nurturing student-teacher environment
- A commitment to emphasizing core values and character development at all grade levels
While the school has no religious affiliation, all students attend a short daily chapel service, led by the Head of School, featuring readings and prayers from a variety of faith traditions. In the upper grades, students themselves help to lead morning chapel.
Located in temperate Claremont, California, the school has recently broken ground on a new upper school academic building, and has begun increasing enrollment, starting in the lower grades. While enrollment today is 224 students K-8, Foothill aims to grow to its eventual capacity of 360 students in grades K-8 within the next few years. The separate Seedling Pre-K Program currently enrolls 53 students, with capacity for 60. The campus is a mix of well-proportioned buildings and verdant outdoor spaces.
The school is composed of the Seedling School plus three divisions: Lower School (K-2), Middle School (3-5) and Upper School (6-8). Class work focuses on both content and skill development and is enriched by offerings in the arts, technology and languages. Currently the school offers Spanish starting in the Seedling School, plus French and Latin. All grade levels feature an athletic component, with options for interscholastic sports for older students.
The school seeks an academic leader of courage, clarity, consistency and a clear sense of morals and ethics, in line with the school’s mission. He or she will both embrace the school’s enduring heritage and culture of excellence while addressing the challenges inherent in a rapidly expanding school community. The successful candidate will have a record of forging lasting connections with students, faculty, staff, Board members, parents and alumni and a passion for academic excellence.
