Founded in 1968, Edmund Burke School is an urban, co-educational, independent, college preparatory school that provides a challenging curriculum in a respectful and affectionate environment. It welcomes students of varied backgrounds and diverse gifts, each of whom it believes is capable of intellectual growth and academic achievement. The School’s founders valued education as central to the goal of responding effectively to the social and moral challenges of the day and sought to create a school where students and teachers form partnerships to make learning a rich and rewarding reality. Burke continues to provide middle and high school education that cultivates a sense of human possibilities and engenders a sense of responsibility to the diverse community of students entrusted to its care.
Burke students come from a diverse range of ethnic, socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds. 34% are students of color. Approximately 23% of the student body receives some form of financial assistance ranging from 15% to 99% of full annual tuition. Virtually all of Burke students go on to college. The student to faculty ratio is 7 to 1, and 74% of Burke’s teaching faculty hold graduate degrees. The School also supports students and their families with an experienced and qualified team consisting of a college counselor, School counselor, learning specialists, librarian, and administrative staff.
Challenging and flexible, the curriculum at Edmund Burke School is designed to offer each student a wide range of opportunities for discovery and creativity. It encourages the kind of risk-taking that often leads to accomplishment beyond expectations. Students profit from the rich variety of both required and elective courses in the humanities, mathematics, sciences, arts, community service and physical education. Burke is a member of the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference, which includes many of the other independent schools in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area and fields interscholastic teams in basketball, cross country, track and field, soccer, softball, golf, swimming, volleyball, dance, and wrestling.
Located in the upper northwest quadrant of the District of Columbia, Burke completed a new 30,000 square foot classroom building in 2006, which doubled the size of the School. Edmund Burke is accredited by the Middle States Association and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington, and the National Association of College Admissions Counselors.
The Board of Trustees seeks an outstanding educator to lead this vibrant school with a commitment to progressive education. The new Head must embrace the School’s mission; be conversant with best practices in independent education; and be committed to fostering warm relationships with students, faculty and parents in a very supportive and close-knit community.
