School Profile

Founded in 1969 as a Pre-school for students with disabilities, The Katherine Thomas School is now an independent day school for students with language and learning disabilities and high functioning autism in preschool through twelfth grade. KTS is a one of five divisions of the Treatment and Learning Center, a private 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization serving children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. It is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of citizens and community business leaders. Consumer and Medical Advisory Boards also provide support. Other divisions of TLC include: The Testing and Tutoring Service, The Outcomes Service, The Outpatient Services, The Family Hearing Center, and The Early Learning Center. In addition, TLC offers summer programs for children ages 3-14 through Camp Littlefoot.

An Elementary School was added twelve years ago, a Middle School in 1997, and a High School in 2005. Elementary/Middle School capacity is 100. Students are staffed by 55 teachers and learning specialists. The operating budget is $3.5 million. The Elementary/Middle School shares a 47,000 square foot building in Rockville, Maryland with the High School which has a capacity of 75, a staff of 33, and a budget of $2.3 million. The mission of KTS is to enable students, nursery through twelfth grade with learning and language disabilities to reach their full educational potential through a multi-sensory, developmental, language-intensive curriculum.

KTS’s philosophy is that children with language and learning disabilities have both academic and therapeutic needs that must be addressed simultaneously in a unified program for effective learning to occur. A multi-disciplinary team, working together designs and implements the educational program. Related services are highly integrated with classroom instruction. The curriculum is language-intensive, stressing reading and written expression and a thematic approach that utilizes multi-sensory methods of instruction. Each student is provided individualized instruction and receives integrated related services as s/he is supported to transition into less restrictive settings.

Hallmarks of the KTS are quality, innovation, team work in the service of students’ growth. A voluntary Board of Trustees and a strong and supportive Parents’ Association partner with a highly qualified and motivated staff. 

Position Description:

The Director of the Elementary and Middle School is a member of the TLC Executive Director’s administrative team and reports directly to him.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for

-- providing a special education program of consistently high quality which achieves significant student progress and which is accredited by the appropriate organizations.

-- maintaining an effective team of administrators, teachers, clinicians and support personnel by creating an environment in which their contributions are recognized and rewarded

-- establishing a climate of innovation and creativity in which improvements in methods, processes, and outcomes are continually achieved

--promoting KTS as the school of choice through effective communication with the community, educational associations, and other schools

Maintaining a financially sound school by representing KTS effectively in the TLC budgeting process and by effectively managing revenue and expenses to meet budget goals

Qualifications:

Five years administrative and managerial experience in a private special education school

Experience with a multi-disciplinary team environment for delivery of services to students

Proven leadership ability

Understanding of language-based learning disabilities

Master’s degree in education, special education or a related field

Special Education certification desirable

High energy, consistent follow through and an exemplary work ethic

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, handling multiple assignments in a busy School

Superior organizational skills with demonstrated ability to set and achieve ambitious goals and meet deadlines

 Compensation and Benefits:

The salary of the Director of the Katherine Thomas Elementary and Middle School is competitive and based on years of experience and expertise.  It is a full-time, twelve month position beginning immediately or no later than July 1, 2009.
