Director of Advancement Search for March 2010
Responsibilities:
The Director of Advancement serves as a senior executive officer of the school, in charge of overseeing and effectuating all operations of the Advancement Department.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Advancement is responsible for the leadership and management of the Advancement Office, including all aspects of fundraising through annual, capital, planned giving, event supervision, alumni outreach and programming, communications and public relations.
The Director of Advancement delegates particular functions and duties to other employees in the Department as deemed appropriate or as the Head may direct, and oversees and monitors the performance of the employees to whom such responsibilities have been delegated.
Specifically, the Director of Advancement:
• Works with staff to develop dollar goals and strategies for each fundraising program, including cultivation strategies for all major gift prospects, development of a Planned Giving Program, and strategic planning for increasing the school’s endowment over time.
• Oversees overall Advancement Office personnel activities, including the definition of job responsibilities, hiring, and performance review process for each staff member, in collaboration with the Human Resources Manager.
• Oversees Advancement Office operations, including gift accounting and acknowledgement, pledge collection, creation of financial records, computer system operations, prospect research, donor stewardship, reconciliation with the Business Office, and providing necessary information for external audits.
• Works with Head of School and the Board Advancement Committee to manage major gift prospects.
• Oversees the creation and supervision of the Advancement Office budget, including approval of contracts and expenses, in conjunction with the Head and CFO.
• Serves on the Head’s Administrative Team of senior administrators and as the staff liaison to the Advancement Committee of the Board. Serves also on the Marketing Committee, the Finance Committee, and as needed on the Endowment and Board Committees.
• Provides information, including both internal research and external benchmarking, to the Head, in regards to available funds and expected gifts, including an assessment of expected gifts, the status of pledges, and the likelihood of collection.
• Oversees all alumni relations programming, including communications, database management, stewardship, and on-campus and off-campus events.
• Oversees all advancement-related communications and marketing activities, including print, electronic, video and web-based publications.
• Together with the Head, acts as the school’s Public Information Officer.
• Works with Offices of Admissions, Head’s Office, and Section Principals to provide adequate public relations and marketing of school to all external constituencies.
• Takes on additional projects as directed by the Head.
Qualifications and desired personal qualities:
The Director of Advancement must quickly become an integral member of the school community. Integrity, warmth, flexibility, and open-mindedness, are highly desirable. Diplomacy and a good sense of humor are a necessity. In addition, the right candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit development and campaign management
• Previous major gift experience
• Previous management experience
• Previous experience working with volunteers and volunteer boards
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Flexibility to work outside of the normal business hours
• Strong multi-tasking and organizational ability
• Experience working in an international, multi-cultural environment
• Fluency in French a plus
