James R. Maggart

After teaching mathematics and science in public schools in California, Jim spent ten years in Istanbul, Turkey, first as a teacher in the American College for Girls and then as Headmaster of Robert College. He returned to the United States in 1981 as Head of St. John’s School, TX and in 1991 became Head at Hamden Hall School (CT).

Jim attended Northwestern University majoring in Electrical Engineering for three years before completing a B.A. in Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley. He subsequently earned an MAT in Mathematics at Brown University and an MBA from Stanford University. He has served as a trustee of The American Hospital in Istanbul and trustee and Board Chair of Robert College, Turkey, The Country School (CT), and as President of the Connecticut Association of independent Schools, the Independent Association of the Southwest, and the Turkish American Education Foundation.  He was a member of the Fulbright Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States and Turkey. Since 1980, he has chaired over 30 accreditation teams domestically and abroad and continues this works as a member of the Commission on American and International Schools Abroad for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Jim joined EC in 2004. He has assisted international school in Europe, Africa, China and the Middle East and independent school is the U.S. with head searches, strategic planning, governance, compensation reviews and financial planning.
